Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsWhat you are really buying
Nobody sells you a rental. A vendor sells you a record that someone, somewhere, typed or said something about needing a machine. That record might be a form fill from a homeowner who wants a plate compactor for the weekend, a phone call from a landscaper who needs a stump grinder on Monday, or a row in a spreadsheet of building permits pulled last quarter. Those three things share a name and almost nothing else.
Rental is a business of availability and timing. A person searching for a mini excavator or a scissor lift usually needs it within days, compares two or three yards on rate and delivery, and rents from whoever answers first with a machine that is on the lot. That behavior is why shared quote requests feel productive and then disappoint: the inquiry went to several counters at once, and the yard with the lowest rate or the fastest reply took it.
When you hear a pitch to buy equipment rental leads, translate it into four questions. Who is the person? What did they ask for? How many other yards got the same message? What happens when it turns out to be a dead end? The rest of this page is a way to get honest answers to those four.
One thing to be clear about up front: GetPhound does not sell, resell or broker leads, and we do not run a lead marketplace. We help rental companies build demand sources they own. That is the only sales pitch on this page, and it sits at the bottom.
Lead types
| Lead type | How it is usually sold | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Shared quote-request forms from homeowners and small contractors | Per submission, delivered to several yards at once | You race other counters on rate and speed, and the machine requested may not be in your fleet |
| Exclusive quote requests for one area | A monthly territory fee or a per-request price with one buyer per zone | Slow months still bill, and a territory only pays if enough local people actually rent |
| Live phone transfers | Per call or per call over a minimum length | Callers who wanted a retailer, a repair shop, or a yard in another state; recordings are your only proof |
| Contractor project lists from permits and bid boards | Subscription or per record | A name on a list is not a request, the data ages fast, and many general contractors already hold rental accounts |
| Marketplace or directory listings | Listing fee, featured placement, or pay per click | Direct price comparison on the same machine class and rankings you do not control |
| Event and party rental inquiries | Per inquiry through wedding and event platforms | Date conflicts, deposit questions and setup windows your crews cannot meet |
| Commercial account introductions for facilities and industrial buyers | Per booked intro call | Credit approval takes time, net terms strain cash, and the buyer may already have a master agreement |
How to vet a vendor
Request a screenshot of the actual form or the script a call center reads. Does it ask for machine class, rental dates, job site address and whether the renter needs delivery? A form that only asks for a name and number produces callbacks, not rentals.
Get the answer in writing: one buyer, a handful, or an open pool. For rental, the honest follow-up is whether your competitor across town is on the same list.
A request that sits for an hour has usually already been answered by someone else. Ask for delivery by text, email or a push into your rental software, and test it with your own number.
If you are buying phone leads, require recordings of every call, including the ones the vendor says were disqualified. Hearing ten of them tells you more than any dashboard.
Duplicates, wrong numbers, out-of-area jobs, and people asking about equipment sales instead of rentals should all be creditable. Note the window: a credit period shorter than your quote cycle protects the vendor, not you.
Look at the checkbox text people agreed to and whether it names you. Then read the term, the minimums, the auto-renewal and the cancellation steps before you sign anything.
Red flags
Exclusive
If a vendor cannot show the exact ZIP codes or radius around your yard, the word exclusive means nothing.
Reporting
Dashboards full of leads delivered but nothing about which ones rented. Your own counter system is the only honest scoreboard.
Where it comes from
Phrases like proprietary network or premium audience, with no description of the form, the ad or the call script behind it.
Sales behavior
A vendor who pushes volume before you have seen a single rental close is solving their problem, not yours.
Contract
Credits you buy up front tend to vanish into unreadable terms. A small first purchase teaches you more.
Quality
A phone number that has been sold before and is now being resold as fresh. Ask for the date and time each inquiry was created.
Fit
Leads for categories you do not carry, such as aerial work platforms when your yard rents only compaction and hand tools.
Questions owners ask
Vendors price by the lead, the call or the territory, and the number varies a lot by region and machine class, so ask for the full invoice for a month and divide by rentals that closed. Owned sources are billed differently: the GetPhound RankGuarantee™ page engine is $495 a month, a managed ad program starts at $895 a month plus whatever you pay the ad platform, and the Organic Growth SEO plans begin at $1,495 a month. None of it carries a setup fee or a contract.
Sometimes, if your yard has a counter set up for small tickets and fast turnover. A one-day plate compactor rental is a different business than a month-long skid steer to a contractor. Work out what a typical small rental earns after delivery or pickup time, damage waiver handling and the staff minutes it takes, then decide what you can afford to pay for the inquiry.
They can open doors, but a list is a prospecting tool, not demand. Someone still has to call the site superintendent, earn a credit account and beat the yard that already serves that firm. Treat it as outbound sales support with its own cost of labor.
Tag the source on the quote or contract in your rental system, or keep a simple sheet that matches each lead to a contract number. If counter staff do not log the source, you will never know and the vendor will always look good.
They can fill a gap for a few weeks if the machines requested are the ones sitting idle. They cannot change weather or construction schedules, and a vendor who suggests otherwise is selling a result nobody controls.
Buy a small amount, route every lead to one named person, call back within minutes, and log what happens to each. After a few weeks you will know the answering rate, the quote rate and the rental rate, and you can walk away without a contract hanging over you.
No. We do not sell, resell or broker leads. We help rental companies build local pages, map listings, managed ads and review profiles that bring in requests the yard owns, and we measure each source against rentals completed.
