Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsHow patio buyers shop
Almost every homeowner has the same two thoughts when a patio comes to mind: what could it look like, and what will it cost. Search results and project-matching sites answer both questions in a few clicks, which is why a "get a quote" form is so easy to fill in. The result is a large pool of people who are curious, a smaller pool who have a budget, and a smaller one still who will sign this season.
The decision itself is more involved than it looks. People weigh pavers against poured concrete or natural stone. They think about drainage and the slope of the yard, about how the patio meets the house and about whether a retaining wall, steps, a fire feature, lighting or a pergola belongs in the same project. They are advised to get several quotes, so a bought inquiry usually arrives alongside other contractors who are called on the same day.
Where you work changes the calendar. In places with cold winters the ground freezes and installation stops for a stretch, so inquiries collected in early spring can sit in a long queue before crews are free. In warmer areas the work runs more evenly through the year. Ask any vendor how their volume moves across the seasons, and compare that to your crew capacity.
The craft itself matters too. A good patio starts below the surface with base preparation, compaction and grading so water moves away from the house. Homeowners often cannot judge that from a quote, so they choose by trust, photos, reviews and the feeling they get from the person who walks the yard. Bought inquiries put you in front of a stranger who has seen no photos of your work, and that is where the cost tracking below earns its value.
The worksheet
| Stage | What to record | Why it changes the math |
|---|---|---|
| Inquiry arrives | Source name, date and time, project type, stated budget or square footage if any | Lets you compare vendors, ads, referrals and your map listing on equal terms |
| First contact | Minutes until a person responded, number of attempts, whether the homeowner answered | Shared inquiries often go cold fast, so response time explains many weak results |
| Estimate visit booked | Whether a visit was scheduled and how far out | Counts how many inquiries were real buyers and how long the queue is |
| Visit held | Drive time, time on site, notes on grade, drainage and access | Visits are the hidden cost, because a crew lead or owner spends real hours on each one |
| Quote sent | Scope, materials, estimated square feet, amount, any discounts offered | Shows whether bought inquiries push you to cut price more than your other sources |
| Follow-up | Dates and outcomes of each follow-up | Many patio jobs sign after the second or third touch, so a single call is not a test |
| Signed | Contract value and expected gross margin after materials and labor | A cheap inquiry that signs a thin-margin job is not cheap |
| Finished | Change orders, callbacks and the homeowner's review | Tells you whether this source sends the kind of customer who becomes a reference |
A small test
Choose a target such as paver patios of a certain size range in a defined area, and ask the seller to match it.
Set the most you will spend and the number of site visits you are willing to give the test before judging it.
Decide how quickly someone calls back, who does it and how many attempts you make. Keep it the same for every source.
Use the worksheet for every inquiry, including the ones who never pick up.
Add the hours of the people who call, drive and estimate to the vendor invoice. That total divided by signed patios is your real cost.
Line it up against referrals, your Google listing, your own pages and any ads you run yourself.
Hidden costs
Labor
Every site visit to someone who was only browsing is paid time with no job at the end of it.
Travel
If the seller's territory is wider than your crews will travel, each visit adds fuel and drive hours.
Margin
When a homeowner holds two other quotes, discounts creep in. Track average margin on bought jobs against referrals.
Credits
You may pay for the same household twice or for disconnected numbers unless the contract gives you real credits.
Fees
Some programs charge extra to appear higher or to get inquiries sooner. Ask for every line item.
Timing
Inquiries that arrive when crews are booked out are worth less than the same ones in a gap.
Reputation
If a vendor sends your name to people who never asked for you, complaints land on your business.
What stays with you
The structural difference between a bought inquiry and an owned one is simple. When you pay a vendor for an inquiry, the next one costs the same again. When you build a source of your own, such as a set of local pages describing your paver, stone and concrete work in each town, a map listing with project photos and a steady flow of reviews, much of that work continues paying off.
That is the work we do. GetPhound does not sell leads or broker them, and we do not run a marketplace. We help hardscape contractors build and run the sources they own, then track them against signed work.
The numbers are straightforward. RankGuarantee™ runs $495 monthly and publishes 25 new local pages every month, with the pages managed and their rankings tracked. Organic Growth begins at $1,495 monthly for Silver and moves to $2,495 for Gold, which includes a fully managed custom website, and $3,495 for Platinum. Paid ads management is $895 for one platform, $1,595 for two or $2,295 for three, with spend paid to the platform. You can stop in any month and there is no charge to start. The pricing page lists everything.
Many patio contractors end up with a mix: a measured, capped trial of a bought source in the weeks when the crew has room, and steady investment in their own presence the rest of the year. The worksheet above tells you which one earns its place.
Questions
It can be a reasonable short test, particularly when you enter a new town or want to fill a gap in the schedule. As a permanent plan it is expensive because every inquiry is paid for again and the homeowner is usually talking to other contractors too. Judge it by cost per signed patio, not by how many forms arrive.
Define the job you want, limit the territory to where you will actually drive, set a spending cap, get credit rules in writing and read real inquiries before agreeing to more. Track every one through to signed or lost.
They are cheaper per inquiry and more competitive. If your estimator can reply within minutes and you win on presentation, shared inquiries can work. If response is slow, exclusive inquiries or owned sources may make better use of your time.
Prices from sellers differ by market and are their own claims, so compare on cost per signed job after adding your time. Owned sources: RankGuarantee™ at $495 a month, Organic Growth starting at $1,495 a month, and managed ads from $895 a month with ad spend extra.
More than one. Homeowners often take time to compare and discuss with family. Plan a handful of touches over a couple of weeks, using phone, text and email in a way that respects consent, and stop when they ask you to.
Ask for sample inquiries with identifying details removed, the form wording, how many buyers receive each one and their credit policy. Be wary of results claims that cannot be checked.
They affect which jobs are feasible and how long they take. Larger structures, retaining walls and drainage changes may need approvals depending on where you work, so confirm local requirements instead of assuming.
