| Situation | Does buying fit? | Reason | What to do alongside it |
|---|---|---|---|
| A new truck and driver with no regular work yet | Often yes, for a short test | You need calls now, and a fresh driver gives you time to answer fast | Start a map listing and local pages the same week so the owned source is maturing during the test |
| Slow shoulder seasons with mild weather | Sometimes | Breakdown calls dip, and trucks sit | Push owned channels, fleet and dealer outreach, and compare cost per tow with the same budget on search ads |
| Opening a new part of your coverage area | Yes, with a tight radius | You have no reviews or reputation there yet | Collect reviews from the first jobs in the area and add a page for each town you serve |
| Night and weekend gaps in your schedule | Maybe | Drivers are paid for the shift whether or not the phone rings | Check how calls route after hours, since a missed midnight call is the costliest kind |
| A storm or ice event | Rarely | Demand already outstrips trucks, and calls can arrive faster than you can reach them | Be listed correctly in advance and keep your phones staffed |
| Accident recovery | Usually not through a vendor | Many places control these calls through a police rotation or similar program, and local rules limit solicitation | Check your city, county and state rules, and the requirements of your rotation list |
| Heavy-duty recovery and specialty hauling | Rarely | Calls are few, ticket sizes are high and shippers or fleets choose on reputation and equipment | Relationships, equipment pages and a clear service list on your site |
| Cash-flow squeeze | No | Rented calls stop the moment payments stop, and prepay deposits tie up money | Fix collection speed and invest in sources that keep working |
What a tow lead is
Most towing leads are phone calls, and the phone is the product. The seller of those towing leads buys ads or controls listings that rank when someone types tow truck near me, flat tire help or locked keys in car, and the calls are passed to a tow company by region. In some arrangements a call center answers first, takes the location and vehicle and dispatches the job to a company that paid for the territory. In others the caller reaches you directly.
Every version of buying towing leads carries a trust problem. A customer who thinks they are calling a specific local company, then meets a driver from another outfit, is often upset before the truck arrives. A price quoted by a dispatcher who is not you can be higher or lower than your own, and you inherit the argument at the curb. Ask exactly what the caller is told, in whose name the call is answered and who sets the price.
Also be clear on the kind of work. Roadside help like jumps, lockouts, fuel and tire changes is fast and low ticket. A light-duty tow to a shop is the core of many fleets. Private property tows, where the vehicle owner did not ask for the service, are heavily regulated in many places, and buying anything built around them needs a close read of local rules. We do not give legal advice, and your state or city towing regulations come first.
GetPhound does not sell leads or run a call marketplace, and we do not name or rank vendors. We help towing companies get found on maps, in search and in AI answers, and track every call back to a paid job.
Before you pay
Territory
Ask for the zip codes or radius the seller will send towing leads from, and verify it on a map against your real response range.
Quote
Decide who quotes the customer, and ask for the exact script. A price you did not approve should never be promised in your name.
Dispatch
Time how long it takes from a customer calling to your phone ringing. A delay of even a short pause can mean a second company picks up.
Audio
Listen to recordings of real calls, including misdials, out-of-area calls and customers who only asked about prices.
Contract
Check minimum terms, deposits, how territory is protected and how you stop receiving calls when you are full.
A tight test
Pick a few weeks that include weekdays, one weekend and an after-hours stretch. A single quiet Tuesday teaches you nothing.
Start with the area you can reach fastest. Set a spending limit and share it with whoever answers phones.
Tag each call as answered, missed, out of area, price shopper or dispatched. Add jobs completed, collected revenue and driver time spent.
During the same window, track calls from your map listing, website and past customers. The comparison is the point of the test.
Divide the cost of the test by jobs actually completed and paid, which gives you the true price of those towing leads. If it beats your other sources, buy a little more. If not, stop on schedule.
Questions
It can be when you have idle trucks, a defined territory and a dispatcher who answers fast. It is a poor fit if you are chasing calls you cannot reach. Test with a cap and judge the towing leads by completed, paid tows.
Sellers set their own prices and territories, so compare cost per completed tow rather than cost per call. As a reference point, RankGuarantee™ landing pages are $495 a month, managed paid ads start at $895 a month and Organic Growth starts at $1,495 a month, with ad spend separate and no contract.
Ask for recordings of the towing leads, a call log with timestamps and the forwarding number. Place test calls from different phones and locations, and compare your own call records to the seller report.
Many cities, counties and states limit how companies get accident and private property tows, often through a rotation or permit system. Check your own jurisdiction and do not buy anything built around sidestepping those rules.
Those programs are another kind of paid work source: they send jobs at agreed rates and have their own requirements. Read the rate sheet, payment timing and response expectations, and compare the margin with what a direct customer pays.
A claimed map listing, accurate hours and service areas, local pages and reviews put your number in front of people searching near them, and the calls come to you directly. They take time to build but belong to your company.
Time, location, type of job, whether the customer was quoted a price, outcome and source. Also record where the caller first saw your number, because that is how you learn which source pays.
